More Information | Rate Accuracy of This Model
Surfline's LOLA Swell Model is the ONLY global swell model that can separate individual swells to accurately calculate surf heights for any location on Earth. Every surf spot will only have a limited range of swells that produce good surf at that location. Compare the LOLA swell forecast with a spot's "Optimal Conditions" information and your own local knowledge to score the best surf.
The "Swell Rose" above is the only one of it's kind in the world. This shows the directions of all the incoming swells
(N=0° East=90° etc). If you mouse over the swell rose you can see detailed raw numbers of the underlying swells.
US Weather data comes from the WeatherUnderground array of personal weather stations. Data is near realtime. International weather comes from LOLAs high resolution models or WUG where possible.
Tides are generated using the most excellent Xtide system.

Talk about entering a ‘period of heightened activity.’ Gustav weren’t even done workin’ the Gulf before Hanna reached hurricane status off the Bahamas, and both Ike and Josephine became earned names out in the Atlantic. With Gustav killing 77 in Haiti alone, this season could quickly grow even deadlier. Monitor every storm at National Hurricane Center and stay tuned to Jeff Masters blog for a thorough discussion.
Meanwhile, the storm over offshore drilling is getting nastier as current Florida legislation could set a precedent for all US coastal states. Read Surfline’s coverage then click here to speak your mind.
Back home, the big news is the 10th Annual K-Coast / Reef Surf Challenge will go down Sept. 6 at 35th Street in OCMD. Deadline to enter is Sept. 5, noon, at K-Coast on 35th Street. This is a major fundraising event for the Ocean City Firefighters and Paramedics. Free Firewire for winners in all divisions, plus a $500 airfare voucher for the Open Men’s champ and plenty of prizes. Click here for more.
The comps continue all over the Mid-Atlantic this weekend thanks to the ESA. Virginia will hold contest $3 at 1st Street in VB. The Outer Banks district will be in Hatteras. ESA SNC has a question mark for #5 (check the site for details.) Ditto for CNC’s floating site, ‘covered dish’ and ‘super heat’ event. Northern South Carolina’s hosting the 2008 Conway National Bank Surf-Off at the 2nd Access. And Georgia will hold Tybee Contest #7.
Also on Sept. 6, OCMD Surfrider will meet at noon at Bull on the Beach, 94th Street. And that night, at 6:30pm, it’s the annual Luau at Castaways on 63rd Street, featuring the Diamondheads. $10 gets you in for drink specials, eats, (And don’t forget the Seacrets "scholarship" raffle every Saturday — $20 chance at huge prize).
Capitol Surfrider will clean up their adopted stretch of the Delaware Seashore State Park on Sept. 6 from 10:30am to 1:30pm. (Be sure to ask about their 14th annual Paddle for Clean Water on Sept. 13.)
Surfrider Grand Strand will meet Monday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach State Park, Shelter B-2 to discuss current issues, upcoming events and the Chilympics. (Also, mark your calendar for Sept. 13’s Withers Swash Sweep and Cookout from 9 am to noon. )
On Sept. 9, Charleston Surfrider will be cleaning up Station 22.5 on Sullivan’s Island.
Congratulations to the Virginia Longboard Federation on their invitation to compete in the Malibu Classic surfing contest September 6 and 7. The VLF will be taking their top team riders, including Sean Knight, Morgan Knight, Mike Melichorre, Kate Easton, Cam Fullmer, Ryan Merritt, Bob Holland, Brandon Minor, Ricky Judelena, Dorothy Edwards, Mike Agnew, Bree Kleintop, Johnny Fay, Jim Provo, Justin Bowen and Hank Marx.
And looking way out, Virginia Beach will be honoring Josh Thompson with a huge walk and beach party on October 19 t the Ocean Front. Josh was tube riding Cloudbreak on Tavarua, and craving on Hawaiian swells just three years ago. Now with Lou Gehrig's Disease his surfing days are over. The Walk will be along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk with free food, drinks, bands and many surprises. Come honor one of our own, and support ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) research. JTWalk.org.
