Aloha , this is Maverick with the report for Friday morning at 7:30 AM.
4-7 ft. - shoulder high to 2 ft. overhead and good conditions.
WNW - NW pushing in some nice above head high sets. Good direction for most of the Kona breaks.
Easterly trades are back for the Big islands, with temps reaching the lower 80's and paradise weather conditions all around.
High Surf for our West shores along the Kona coast are building this morning, and will be peaking for the afternoon session with well above head high levels. The largest sets will be focusing on the Kona breaks from Keahole pt. and South, with smaller, but rippable surf for the N,kona - S.Kohala breaks. Light East winds should keep this surf smooth for the morning session, but check the tide charts, with some onshore thermal chop for the afternoon if the temps get hot enough. This all depends on the vog situation. North shores are sitting in a shadow zone from this WNW - NW swell, and will have to wait for some change in direction over the next day, or two. Make it safe out there today, no matter what your level of experience is, and watch out for strong currents, as this swell is packing some punch to it. Save The Waves Coalition recently announced a groundbreaking new event, "The Value of Waves Roundtable," taking place Friday, December 5th in Half Moon Bay. The first-ever event will be at brand-new Oceano Hotel & Spa at Pillar Point Harbor, in the shadow of the word-famous big-wave break "Mavericks." The Roundtable will bring together thought leaders and experts from multiple fields to discuss wave and coastal protection within the context of Save The Waves' new global initiative, the World Wave Sites Program. Surfers complained to North Shore lifeguards that a commercial tour helicopter hovered dangerously close over them as they sat in the lineup at Laniakea in early November. The lifeguards subsequently filed a report with the FAA, who said that if this was true, it was clearly a violation of clearance regulations. It’s also a clear violation of common sense on the pilot’s behalf as well. Surfers on Oahu ’s south shore have made similar complaints about low flying choppers and have been burned by hot engine oil falling on them.
2008 will be known as the year of the weird winds in Hawaii . Local meteorologists have observed the substantial decrease of consistent NE trade winds this year. They say that zonal weather models in the North Pacific have been unusually fickle this year and unfavorable for maintaining the prevailing trades that keep 75% of the Hawaii ’s coastlines groomed with clean offshore conditions. 2008 has produced a record number of Kona wind events that ran the directional gamut from due 100 to 320 degrees and included rare and funky W/NW events. The Konas have also caused pestilence such as thick volcanic haze and funnel clouds across the state. The good news is that secret east facing spots that are normally mushy and onshore are firing and surfable more often. Shhhh!

Dawn patrollers at Puaena Point were spooked out of the water on 11/14, when a large Tiger Shark decided to play happy meal with a sea turtle in clear view of a few freaked out surfers. With the Reef Hawaiian Pro in blissful full swing just across the harbor channel, the waves were a juicy 3’-4’ and it was strange to see the usually packed lineup deserted. Estimates of the shark’s length were between 12’-15’, and although it’s early in the winter season, this is not the first big shark scare at PP in the last two months. Keep your eyes peeled when surfing out there.
Some idiots keep trashing the beach at Piddleys, right next to Chun’s Reef. They’re partying there at night, and then leaving smoldering fires and throwing beer bottles, plastic bags, food wrappers, cigarettes, and cans all over the beach for dawn patrollers to clean up. Like grafitti, it’s an obvious attempt to shock and sadden others. This pristine area serves as a nesting ground for endangered Hawaiian sea birds and is the paddle out spot for Piddleys, a discreet and rippable lefthander. So to whoever is doing this, knock it off and you’re damned lucky us surfers didn’t catch you in the act! Consider...
