The bubble finally burst.
When Industry giants Quiksilver and Reef cut into their workforce with sweeping, wholesale layoffs in the first two months of the new year, it became apparent that the surf industry could no longer hide from the wrath of a plummeting economy. After close to a decade of growth and evolution, after being absorbed into mainstream ad-culture and pop-culture, the glass ceiling has been reached.

You know its bad when there's no surf and no work.
John Van Sickle 03/05/2009 06:31 PM
With the downturn in construction, there are alot more surfers in the line-up. This is especially true during dawn patrol hours. And the mood is not good.

Oh Spicoli... Just go surf and enjoy mother nature and get tubed :) California needs a earth quake to really shake things up! Kooks are kooks and will always be. This Economy is a humbling time to sit back n figure out how your going to make it on your own. Money isn't free, its hard work to make a buck! Your fortunate to be alive and have air to breath! Go enjoy a surf and Thank God for it!

One factor everyone has seemed to miss is the lack of quailty surf, yea there has been some surfable days here and there. After November where did the waves go? The economic down turn has hit us all but if there were insane waves people would find a way to buy the surf gear they need. Especially the essentials like wax,sun block ect....

definitely you guys talked to the wrong people for this. why? they have jobs. if you would have interviewed me, i would have told you how I got fired, have zero income, can't find another job, not even at the temp agency, can't pay for my car to get fixed so i'm taking the bus, getting booted from my house because i can't pay rent, and i am seriously thinking about seeing if mcdonald's is hiring. yeah, sounds like these folks in la jolla are having a real rough time.

May as well just go to Malibu or Beverly Hills and ask them them the same questions. Purchasing less gear and perhaps not taking so many surf trips each year must be such a drag. I'm sure the local LJ bars and restaurants aren't hurting either.
Not one person in LJ seemed to be affected by the near depression our economy is in. but consider the territory you were asking the question. Try asking the same question in PB OB or IB and you might actualy receive some coherent answers. How lame

allan- Way to point out the relevance of "The Creature from Jekyll Island", your referring to the creation of the federal reserve and the fiat money system that is currently under tremendous stress. Our bubble has finally burst & deleveraging is a tough process. We all owe it to ourselves to learn how our country got here! Time for everyone to get back to whats really important; not rampant consumerism, but relationships & experiences - like surfing. At least the breaks are a bit less crowded.

Allan,
I have not read it but plan on doing so. It gives me hope that there are people, especially on here, that recognize the source of our problems. The only way we can prosper and be truly free again is to "educate and inform the masses...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." I'll continue to spread the truth wherever I can. Thanks Allan and Luiz! And anyone searching for truth, Ron Paul's "The Revolution" is a great place to start.

All valid comments. This dose affect the rich kids in La Jolla no doubt, but try asking the 30 something working stiffs up in Oceanside with 2 kids at home.
Get Outside Your Bubble.

Classic! Now I remember why I left San Diego. I've always thought that California is wasted on californians
allan weisbecker 02/24/2009 05:30 PM
at this writing about 6,000 people have viewed this back and forth about the future of this country. so far, a total of 24 (25 counting me) give a shit enough to respond. out of the 24, exactly one ('clark') shows any knowledge of... anything... hey clark: have you read The Creature from Jekyll Island?

Clark, it's amazing that on a surf website you've made the most intelligent argument for solving the economic "crisis". Imprision Alan Greenspan. Surfline, I agree - this story is a complete waste of bandwith similar to the one you guys ran on "What do you think the Obama Administration is going to do for the surf industry?" Seriously, stick to surf forecasting and promoting the surf industry. This is garbage.

Hey Red, sounds like you're in denial. Guess what, times are tough and sticking your head in the sand (or a tube) isn't going to make it go away.

Checking in with La Jolla surfers shows that they are affected by the economic downturn, but I think that listening to some surfers from H.B. or Ventura would give us a much better perspective of how the average surfer is dealing with a difficult economy.
