SURF NEWS Typhoon Choi-Wan sends big surf to Japan; turns extra-tropical and lights up North Shore

After slamming Japan and the surrounding exposed locations of the western Pacific with large surf, former typhoon Choi-Wan merged with a frontal low pressure system and formed a super-charged extra-tropical storm in the Northwest Pacific.

This system, now with its sites set toward the east, has been and is still pumping out a solid NW groundswell for Hawaii as well as a good WNW groundswell for California.

For Hawaii's northerly exposures -- Oahu's North Shore -- the swell will rapidly build over Thursday afternoon/night and peak on Friday before easing.
For California, expect this energy to fill in over Saturday and peak on Sunday before it begins to taper off next week. (This'll show best for Northern and Central CA, as Southern CA will feel some shadowing by Point Conception and the Channel Islands.)
