Five years after the critically acclaimed release of Sprout, his second feature-length surf film,
Thomas Campbell's follow-up project, The Present, opened to a full house on Friday, March 6 at Encinitas' historic La Paloma Theatre.

The mood opening night was anticipatory more than anything, as many of those who made their way to La Paloma were eager to see the latest offering from the sometimes enigmatic though seemingly always en vogue Campbell. The expectation surrounding this movie certainly added to its intrigue, but if Campbell was looking for approval from the audience, he got it resoundingly as choruses of hoots, hollers and cheers erupted throughout the showing. Thomas Campbell's brand of art, however, isn't for everyone. Whether you like his work or not, Thomas Campbell's films are nothing if not uniquely Thomas Campbell -- he has the audacity to make the type of movie no one makes anymore; a new-by-being-retro type kick. Opinions and barroom fodder aside, the fact remains that the surfing in this film is inspiring and can change the way you look at riding a wave. And when it comes down to it, that's all that really matters. The U.S. Tour of The Present continues through May. Click here to find a showing in a surf-friendly city near you.
