This year's X Games XIV,
going down from July 31-August 3 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, features several new extreme sports, including BMX Street, Moto X Best Whip, Women's Moto X Racing, Moto X Speed & Style and BMX and Skateboard SuperPark. But unlike the last five years, surfing will not be included in the world's most visible action sports gala. (According to organizers, it will return in 2009.) |
|
This year's surfing portion of the X Games was slated to go down at Puerto Escondido again over a four-day waiting period in early July - during dates that overlapped the Billabong Pro J-Bay, which ensured no WCT surfer would be able to attend. "Actually, very few WCT surfers expressed any interest in competing due to grueling schedules," commented Gerr. "Our original dates were the end of June, but ESPN thought it was too far away from X Games, so we rescheduled around the Mr. Price Pro in Durban as to get the best WQS and junior surfers." And this year's roster did indeed look like a who's who of who's next: Americans Clay Marzo, Dusty Payne, Tonino Benson, Sebastian Zeitz, Jamie O'Brien, and Pat Gudauskas were going to do battle against Ry Craike, Laurie Towner, Owen Wright, Jay Quinn, Michel Bourez, and Tiago Connerero for X Games Gold. But according to Gerr, the folks at the X Games wanted bigger names. "They were looking for Kelly, Andy, Bruce, Taj, Parko, Mick, Dane, and Jordy," explains Gerr. "But the reality of the situation is that those guys are really, really busy and already make all kinds of money. Which is a great thing in our sport. But they're not going to get those guys unless they're willing to put a lot more money into either promotion within the surf world and/or more prizemoney. If they had a million bucks up for the winning team, the best guys in the world would be all, 'sign me up'." "Just like how the Lakers and Celtics are constantly being dissected and talked about on every sports station; that's how they should promote surfing in the X Games; commentary about the teams and their stars regarding their strengths and weaknesses should be broadcast. ESPN needs to prioritize building anticipation leading up to the games."
--NSL founder and surf X-Games organizer Brad Gerlach

If they really want to do somethng add the highlights from the XXL Big Wave contest and then disect it (Brad Gerlach). Give the X-Games viewer a taste of what it's like to paddle into a Todos Wave or be towed into a Teahupoo bomb! Then maybe the sponsors will take a look at including it. Play the videos on a huge screen between secessions at the live games and all hell will break lose. After all isn't that the point of the X-Games anyway.....

Geek. You must really be one. The street guys haven't told x games to piss off yet because espn builds them one of the sickest courses of the year and lets them have at it in a jam format showcasing it to the world.and guess what, the very best street dudes in the world show up and rip. without x games, love it or hate it, action sports as we know it would not exist.

I like the Game format and I think Brad has come up with a great concept, but in my opinion The Game doesn't do the Surfers justice in the eye of the mainstream and core audience. Surfing is an individual sport and if you want to be the best in the world, If executed correctly, the big daddy's will come. With the right bait, at the right tide, you get the big fish to bite. X Games should host a 6 star WQS at Mental Spot and put up a huge cash prize. To hear more go to www.storylords.tv

Surfing is a way of life, a sport that requires much time and practice. Here on the east coast, we dont get many waves to begin with, as i speak its been flat for almos 4 weeks. Its ok to me becasue i know when i get out there, its just the best thing in the world. Surfing on the X-Games should mean the same thing. It shouldnt matter about the money or waves, becasue in the long run, surfers understand the toughness of the sport, not the million dollar critics. Surf for the love Gerr is the man!
gerr 06/14/2008 07:18 PM
Hey John is surfing really individual? or is that just the way you've always watched it? Do you always surf alone? go on surf trips alone? etc... Do you surf better when your friends are out? The coolest thing about surfing is that you can do it by yourself if you want. I love that but I love it more when I share waves with my bros... but that's just me
gerr 06/14/2008 07:14 PM
Contrary to popular belief my dream is not to take or make surfing mainstream... If it would stay small that would be cool. But it's not going that way is it? My dream is to make something that already exists more exciting to watch... by making the competition mirror the core of what we all love to do; Surf with our friends and family. This forum will end soon so anyone that wants to continue it should hit me up on Nationalsurfleague.com I'm open to all suggestions, even the neg ones. thanks

I have worked with Gerr on every X Games Surfing event providing audio from the water, with microphones on the surfers and coaches. It has always been a pleasure. I had great expectations to push the quality of the sound for the Internet and for broadcast to levels even better than we had in years past. Looking forward to the next time we meet in Puerto.

The best hat I've ever seen said "surfing sux, don't try it" Let's keep it that way for as long as possible, unless of course it's about the money. But to most surfers its just about surfing sick waves with your buds.
john 06/14/2008 10:41 AM
this is dumb.. it should be in HB....well the waves issue is always going to be hard but they should of not dropped it .. this is terrible. 1. Fault in this event was the fact it was a team thing.. SURFINGS INDIVIDUAL!

john4160, those are good points about the supposed unglamorous parts of surfing: getting caught in the whitewater for a while when the sets keep coming, duck diving, bailing, etc., but skateboarding has similar elements in terms of many hours of practive required to master a trick that looks easy on the ramp or breaking bones while boosting bigger airs etc. People think surfing looks easy but it isnt at all and there's a lot of waiting around till good waves come and that tries on one's patience
dom domic 06/14/2008 12:29 AM
gerr's concept is sick but you need epic conditions for it to work. doesn't happen often. i believe the dom game (tm) provides the competitive drama that would make it work from shitty HB to sick puerto. i understand the point about hassling but that is something all surfers can relate to on a sesh to sesh basis. if you want cutting edge performance watch a vid. so gerr, when are you gonna make it up? ripcurls got a fun comp up here next weekend... you're invited

Who cares about the action sports industry? As far as I'm concerned the less people know about how cool surfing really is the better! Admitt it, the last thing most of us want is more people in the water and that it exactly what bringing surfing to the mainstream is all about. The industry would love to have more fans buying their products and making them richer. The event Provides nothing for your everyday surfer other than entertaiment and for the true surf fan we already have that in the WCT

maybe there production of xgames surf boards weren't in production yet.as there xgames skateboards, skate ramps, shoes, and bicycles have been killing it.we all know what business there in.love you Gerr but your a purest writings on the wall best thing to happen to surfing foresure.just can't beieve the street skate guys haven't told them to piss off..........
john4160 06/13/2008 08:01 PM
Gerr, you are doing a great job. The surfers mentioned for this years cancelled event are exceptional. What media people or mogules, do not understand are the hazards that surfers face during these contests when the surf is firing. What people on T.V. see is a guy in board shorts gliding on a wave(looks easy). What they don't see is the paddle out, duck dives, a 6 foot Puerto close out on the head etc. This is why and surfing will never become mainstream.
Steblay 06/13/2008 05:55 PM
I think the X-Games is good for the action sports industry, like it or not.
