Surf Movie Pioneer Bud Browne Dies in SLO
July 28, 2008
PRESS RELEASE

Surf movie pioneer Bud Browne, who set the standard for water-based filmmaking in waves around the world, has died. He was 96.

Browne, a San Luis Obispo resident, passed away Friday at a local residential care facility, officials from Wheeler-Smith Mortuary and Crematory confirmed Sunday. He had been in poor health recently.

In March, Browne was honored by the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival for his contributions to the surf-film genre.

"Bud's movies were always special because he had these incredible water shots," Jack McCoy, a veteran surf filmmaker, told The Tribune before Browne was honored. "It was something I aspired to later in life -- I'd rather be shooting in the water than on land. And it's all because of Bud Browne."

He is credited by surf historians with setting a precedent for a generation of surf filmmakers, among them Bruce Brown (no relation), whose "Endless Summer" is considered by many to be the seminal surf flick. Link to http://www.sanluisobispo.com/breakingnews/story/423862.html for more.
