CONDITIONS: Saturday saw trying conditions with funky south wind, a little drizzle and some bouncy backwash. But competitors who endured and prospered in the wonky first day scored more than their entry fee's worth.

Sunday gave thousands of spectators a rarity in modern-day California surfing -- the famed, former secret spot turned Naval base open to civilians. And it was damn good.

HIGHLIGHTS:
In surf that Mugu regular Sean Hayes called six out of ten, the action was still nearly epic. Plus, surfing at Pt. Mugu, an anomaly in itself, with only four guys out is next to ideal. The event filled up ultra-quick; drawing the likes of Cory Arrambide, Adam Virs, and Luke Davis.
But when the dust settled after a series of exciting finals, underground Ventura ripper Noah Erickson held out for the win in Open Mens while a frothing Luke Davis took the Young Guns final. And representing the Armed Forces, Mathew Merel claimed the Military Mens division.

QUOTE:
"Surf conditions were good most of the weekend with overhead waves and fat tubes coming in with the South swell, a little bumpy at high tide mid-day, but overall everyone was really stoked to be in the water at the beach on the base! The event vibe was overwhelmingly positive and supportive of the troops and the base. About 8,500 people visited the base over the two days, well exceeding our expectations. Great music provided by Common Sense who played and surfed in the event, Emilbus, Shawn Jones, and Rock of Ages. Over $8,500 was raised for our Single Sailor / Liberty program." -- Dan Alpern, Marketing Director, Naval Base Ventura County
