Surfline's Statement concerning recent post by Lewis Samuels
March 23, 2009
We have received a number of emails lately regarding Lewis Samuels, and a recent post he made in a blog about his relationship with Surfline.
Here are the facts: In March of 2007, we chose Lewis to pen Surfline's ASP Power Rankings. Since that time, he has written 18 of these stories for us; along with seven event previews, three ASP contest reports, two interviews with Andy Irons and one with Kelly Slater.
We enjoyed the contributions Lewis made to Surfline, and looked forward to working with him for years to come. The material he submitted (although often controversial), was, for the most part, well received.
Earlier this year, Lewis began publishing a personal blog, and asked that we support it by providing a link to it from our site, which we were happy to do.
Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that the blog did not possess the standard of journalism that our readers demand from Surfline and that we believe is so important to uphold.
Since it first appeared online, there have been at least two cases where Lewis has published false information and misrepresented the facts. Quite simply, this is not something we can be associated with in any way.
We recognize that the writing on Lewis' site is completely his business, and he can post whatever he wants, whether we or anyone else agrees with what he has to say or how he says it.
But as time passed and the site continued to feature content that was patently inaccurate -- and often inflammatory -- we had to ask ourselves: Do we want someone writing for Surfline who has taken these kinds of liberties?
The answer for us seemed obvious, especially when there are so many qualified, passionate and intelligent surfer/writers out there looking for an opportunity to showcase their work.
We wish Lewis Samuels all the best. He's an intelligent guy with great imagination and flair. We hope he is successful in whatever the future has in store for him.
As for all of us here at Surfline, our future looks like this: We will work as hard we can, with as many good writers as we can find, to give our readers the honest reporting they deserve.
