RIP: Huntington Beach Local Andrew McKenzie Dies in Off-Road Vehicle Rollover
November 11, 2009
This past weekend the local surf community lost one of its own. Andrew Mckenzie was killed last Saturday November 7th at 4:15PM in the desert 10 miles north of Barstow in an off- road vehicle accident. Andrew grew up in Huntington Beach and began surfing there as a young Grommet. The ocean to him, as many other Huntington Beach kids, was his playground. He grew up surfing with all his friends in the shadows of the Huntington pier. When Andrew entered high school he joined the State renowned Huntington Beach Surf team. Andrew surfed for Huntington Beach High school for four years and helped lead the team to several All League and State championships. When speaking to his High school coach Andy Verdone, he described Andrew as a surfer with natural ability that was creative and artistic in his own style. He continued to say that Andrew was a great surfer who could win a heat at any time. However, his true love was the spiritual side of surfing, the side that drew him to the ocean as a young child. Most of all Andrew loved surfing with his friends. He would catch any size wave with ease. He would routinely land 360 airs and then let the next few waves go to friends. Andrew always felt a connection with the ocean, whether he was shredding the jetties in Newport or chasing yellow tail off of Catalina Island. Everyone who lived and surfed with Andrew knows that he will truly be missed in the lineup.
