A photography teacher from East Hampton, New York has won the grand prize in Surfline's 2008 user-submitted photo contest.

Chris Cordone took top honors in an event that pitted his picture of an early morning lineup against tens of thousands of images showcased in Surfline Photos.

The contest worked like this: each month from January through October, Jeremiah Klein, Surfline's Photo Editor, would pick the 20 best images posted in the Photo Channel during the previous 30 days. Next, he would upload them to Surfline.com. Our readers were then called in to select their favorite photo from Miah's picks.

That left nine images out of which one would be chosen as the overall winner by the Surfline Edit Team.

"We selected Chris' photo because the subject matter and composition were the best of all the contenders," explained Klein. "This is the view that excites us as surfers -- walking up the path and seeing your local break going off."

As you can imagine, Chris is stoked to have his picture chosen as the grand prize winner, and is even more excited to be headed to Hawaii. "The kids in my photography class are about as pumped as I am; which is great," he explains. "Everyone wants to get packed in the suitcase to go!"

"The whole community here is thrilled that I am going on this trip, and I am excited to share the images I take with them."

Chris' trip to Hawaii is being sponsored by Vans, who was Surfline's partner in presenting The Photo Challenge throughout 2008. "Because Vans has always been about creative individual expression, being a part of the Surfline Photo Challenge is a natural fit," explains Doug Palladini, VP of Marketing at Vans. "Surfline continues to be a best-of-breed online partner for Vans and the Photo Challenge is just one of many great projects we have been fortunate enough to be a part of."

Chris has agreed to post the photographs he takes of the North Shore on Surfline.com. "The whole community here is thrilled that I am going on this trip, and I am excited to share the images I take with them."

Look for Chris' photos to appear on the site Wednesday, December 25.

Until then, you can view the runner-up photos here.
