MIKE MARSHALL RIP
Longtime SoCal shaper and surf historian passes away
|
|
Mike 'Red' Marshall, longtime member of the Blackies Surf Club and shaper for Harbour Surfboards,
passed away on Saturday, February 6th at 5pm at home in Costa Mesa. He was 67. Marshall had a stroke last week and was checked into the hospital with acute leukemia. |
|
"And one of the nicest guys you could ever meet," says SHF's Barry Haun. Seal Beach shaper and longtime friend Rich Harbour explains: "It is with a heavy heart I forward the following information. As many already know Mike Marshall, my dear friend of more than four and half decades, had a stroke early Monday morning. After arriving at emergency, they found he had a very aggressive form of leukemia. Brain surgery was performed to relieve pressure and he remained in an unconscious state thereafter. "Later in the week, the family was informed that he was not going to survive, so they decided to remove him from all life support and take him home to live his final days where he was most comfortable. He was transported by ambulance Thursday, and on the way to his home they convinced the ambulance driver to take a lap around the parking lot at Blackies. "I visited Friday and Saturday. There were family and friends near him, all in a very positive mood, prepared for the final moments of his life that ended shortly after I left yesterday. "I wish his wife Sharon and family well. These are going to be tough times and my heart and thoughts are with them. May he rest in peace." This is a preliminary story; stay tuned for more information as it becomes available and leave any remembrances or messages below. MORE SURF NEWS SURFLINE HOME PAGE |

Mr. Marshall was my homeroom and History teacher at Nicolas Jr High in the 80s. He proved to us that the dichotomoty between being a serious student and being 'cool' was a false one. It was with my friend Sam Hardin and his dad (a member of Blackie's Classics) that I got to get to know 'Mike' better. He was a quiet inspiration. Thanks, Mike. And condolences to his family for their loss.

Five years ago your amazing husband organized and was the MC for my husband's paddleout at Blackie's. My family was so honored to have him speak. When I play the video of that day, Mike's booming voice and laughter give us peace. He spoke of his own love of surfing and about his memories of the teen years when he and John surfed. He talked about the redheaded, goofy-foot boy who was his friend. Now, there are two goofy-foot Reds circling Blackie's forever. Nancy Elliott, Rooster's widow

I remember Mike Marshall from the 1960's as a very good surfer and friend. He was one of the funniest guys out in the water and a charming mentor. I was also a member of Long Beach Surf Club so witnessed many of the Newport Beach guys. Mike treated me like a little sister and I never will stop thinking about his great sense of humor. I will miss seeing him at the SHF get togethers. Peace be with you and yours, Mike!!!

Dearest Sharon,
Mike was such a devoted husband who spoke so highly of your accomplishments as a surfer, photographer, and cupcake baker extraordinaire. I also know how much he loved his kids and granddaughter, "the swimmer" . It was an honor to serve at the SHF with Mike as a colleague with a passion for education, surfing, and children. Mike was a dear man and friend. I am certain that he is shaping his mansion in heaven so that we can all visit when it is our time. Sending prayers and love.

Newport will miss this true gentleman. He was alway's kind and shared many a wave with myself and my son Jeff. Last time we surfed together was a couple years back. I was surfing 28th with Allen Passaquindici from HB. Blackies was packed and it was just Allen and I at the jetty when Mike joined us for an awesome session of sunny, glassy shoulder high waves. Mike getting excellent block long lefts. Just the 3 of us sharing waves and talking story. Joshua 1 9 comes to mind about Mike's integrity.

I first met Mike around 1962 while he was working at Joe Quigg's surf shop in Newport. As young surf rats, he would let Teddy Rogers and I hang out and listen to his tales of epic long rights and lefts while he sanded away. Mike was on loan from our Maker as a Master Craftsman and shaper. The best things he helped shape were our lives with his wisdom and love. My last memory of Mike was bumping into him at Marshall's. Your memories will stay with us forever.
God Bless the Marshall family

He lived a life filled with kindness, purpose, and was loved by so many. Although he will always be missed, he lives forever in the hearts and lives of those that he touched. If there is a list of "good guys," Mike's name will be on it. If there is a "better place," Mike has earned his spot, and on this planet, he will never be forgotten by everyone he touched. Teachers like Mike certainly made a difference and we all learned a lot from him.
