Some of the Malibu's finest came together last month for a safe and fun day with families and children affected by autism. The event, hosted by the Pat Notaro Memorial Fund through the children's variety club and put on by Surfers Healing, saw sunny skies, and glassy, knee-to-waist high lines stretch from Surfrider Beach to the pier - perfect conditions to pass along the joys of waveriding.

"These children are incredibly in tune with the ocean," said surf instructor Moses Paskowitz. "Every time I come out here I'm reminded why I became a surfer in the first place."

Local guys like Allen Sarlo, Jordan Tappis, Donnie Wilson, Steve Lippman, Ryan Condor and Scott Caan were among the 20 pros that turned up for the cause - playing music, getting wet, hanging out, and grilling some grub. Said Tappis: "We rode waves together, we ate chicken, we laughed and we cried. It was hell of a way to kick off the summer."

Surfers Healing has developed similar surf day camps for children with autism at beaches around the country. The organization was founded by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz after their son Isaiah was diagnosed with autism. For children like Isaiah, the ocean is a calming remedy to regular sensory overload.

Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. It is estimated that 1 in every 150 children are affected. For more information on autism and the event, go to www.surfershealing.org and www.autism-society.org.

This was truly one of the best days of my life! My son Dylan had SO much fun and I was so proud of him. He talks about surfing all the time now (and wants his own board!) Thank you so much to Jimmy for an awesome session and to everyone who helped and made this event happen! Check out Dylan giving the biggest high 5 of his life in picture #2!!!

We joined the malibu event for the first time, and we were a little nervous about how our son, Jackson, would react. He loved it!!! Once he was introduced to his Surfer, he never left his side. Even when the waves were so big that we were biting our nails, Jackson was all smiles and stood proudly on the front of that board. He talks about it all of the time to anyone who will listen. Everyone worked so hard to make the day so special for all of the families. Thank you so much for everything

Sometimes it takes two people just to get Michael into our family car, but Jordan had my son standing/surfing on the first attempt. What a delightful sight for a proud father. Amazing day!

I took my daughter for the first time to the Malibu event. She had the time of her life once she calmed down enough to enjoy it! Thank you Izzy and everyone that give their time to our special kids and a special thank you to Nick for not letting her jump off the board!

My son was one of the first surfers at this camp. He loved it... He smiled all day and tells everyone about surfing in the cold ocean on a HOT day. Thanks I would love to know if you happen to get a photo of him surfing as I did not and wish I had. themitchellfam38@yahoo.com

It worth noting that Pat notaro/memorial fund has been a big sponsor of surfers healing and has sponsored the mailbu event for many years. Many of our volunteers are not pro surfers. Most have the kind of jobs like construction/restaurant/retail/etc. that don't pay when they don't work. Its quite a sacrifice to help us out and they deserve special recognition. Quite literally we could not do these events without their help. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Keith Lovgren Surfers Healing

great photos but the event is hosted by the pat notaro memorial fund through the childrens variety club. yes its a surfers healing event but its all paid through the old mans memorial fund. its a bit of a bummer when his named is not mentioned. in order to keep it ongoing its best to mention his name because those who knew him keep donating to the fund and keep the stoke going.
