Sometimes, you don't chase swell, the swell chases you.
While cyclone surf and lunar high tides created destruction and huge waves in Durban, South Africa last week, an elite crew made their way northwards, away from the storm, to Mozambique to score a fickle, mile-long sand pointbreak.
The group was headed up by big-wave surfer Jason Ribbink and World Tour surfer Travis Logie, and included South African WQS rippers Keegan Nel, Brandon Jackson, Durban standout Greg Lazarus and Quiksilver team manager Dane Patterson. The morning of the 18th saw eight-foot surf, which built steadily all day as cyclone surf went mental on the Durban beachfront. By afternoon the crew were enjoying sunshine, light winds and something that resembled 12-foot J-Bay, stoked they made the trip. (Click here for video.) |
