After waiting six months to hold the event, a clean, solid 12- to 15-foot (Hawaiian scale) swell swept into Chile's famous Punta de Lobos on Halloween day.

An international contingent of tow teams from Chile, The US, Hawaii, Ireland, Australia, Brazil and South Africa took to the famed big-wave point in hopes of winning the first event of the 2008/2009 APT tour season.

After a solid day of riding triple to quadruple overhead waves from behind the rocks, the Aussie slab-hunting team of Koby Abberton and Ryan Hipwood took top honors.

"There were big crowds, everyone was yelling and 'yahooing' as the waves were big," Koby explained. "It was exciting to watch even for me -- I don't watch other contests. This one was cool; people were getting beatings and charging -- it was good TV!"

The next scheduled APT event will be held at Pe'ahi (JAWS) on the north shore of Maui, Hawaii. The top eight finalists from Chile will have an automatic invitation to this event.
