In the end,
it came down to Kelly Slater doing what he's done throughout his storied career; turning an average wave into a winning score. Against wildcard local Eneko Acero, Slater finally clinched his 9th World Title in stormy, dredging Mundaka barrels. Even before the World Championship trophy was presented, the media began asking Kelly about Title 10. |

"This hasn't even sunk in yet." Slater said. "We'll see." Later, Slater discussed the weight of these expectations with me. "Everyone is speaking for what I have to do now. It's as if 9 is not really very good. What's wrong with 9?" Kelly laughed. "How many expressions are there with 10? You're not sitting on Cloud 10, are you? It's almost as if number 9 is only seen as a stepping stone to number 10. I'd be much more than happy to just have 9." Slater, @ the top of the list...SLATER..Tiger, Bonds, Sampras, Montana(Walsh), Hawk & Pele',.Congrats Kelly..Hard to hate a guy w/so much talent. hope he wins 5 more & put's it to the whole tour..By the way he was ridding a quad when he won...the future is now...Hey AI, why did you Pu?? out.& go home...can't even be happy for the guy responsible for the whole movement..get a GRIP...History is what it is. and is repeated unless someone adjust's...take a page from KS..or maybe, 2..see ya n/year.

Congrats Kelly. Truly one of the greatest athletes of all time, and the leading ambassador for the sport. It's sad that his tour mates are such haters.

what a sick year, what a sick career, you are hands down the best surfer ever. take some time and chill with your woman, then come back and get #10 then you will be above mike and tiger. congratulations! from all the south florida boys
