"YOU'RE KIDDING ME?!?!?!"
Those were the words of Jeff Yusa upon hearing that his photo of South Bay surfer Pat Weber was the winner of the 2009 Surfline Photo Challenge presented by Reef.

"I'm in shock right now and my fiance is jumping up and down with joy!"

Jeff has reason to be happy -- he and his gal are flying to Hawaii on Thursday, courtesy of Reef, and will be staying for five days at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore. Jeff will be Reef's special guest at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, and will have the opportunity to shoot the contest alongside lensmen from Surfline, Reef and the Vans Triple Crown. Jeff's pictures will be featured next week in a special pictorial on Surfline.
Jeff's photograph was taken on February 21, but posted in Surfline's User Gallery in June. The editors selected the image as one of the 20 best that month, and then our readers voted it June's Photo Challenge winner -- it received 1123 votes, 202 more than the runner-up.

Once it was selected as the top pic in June, Yusa's image went up against the winners from the months of February, March, April, May, July, August, September and October.

Surfline's Photo Editor, Jeremiah Klein, then chose Jeff's pic as the best of the year. Klein selected Yusa's image because it captured the essence of the very best of surfing. Jeremiah explains: "This photograph showcases a committed surfer with perfect style in a flawless barrel -- while revealing a wonderful sense of place."

"I was stoked my photo was nominated in June," explains Jeff. "But I had low expectations of winning. There were so many good shots that month. As the days progressed and more votes were tallied, the chance of me winning became more realistic. A couple weeks passed and a buddy called to say my shot had won. Stoked! At that point I started looking through the past months' winners and was slightly discouraged because I saw that I was up against some amazing work. When I received word that my photo had been selected as the grand prize winner, I was in shock, literally. I still am."

Check back next week to see Jeff's photos from his trip to the North Shore.
