Local veterans and disabled, along with a group of wounded veterans from Brooke Army Medical Center spent a healing few days in Pismo Beach last week learning to surf. Most of these soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines lost limbs, were burned, or have PTSD from serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Association of Amputee Surfers (AmpSurf) Founders Rodney Roller and Dana Cummings started this event in 2006. "The central coast welcomed us with open arms and open hearts," Operation Comfort Director Janis Roznowski said. "The experience was so positive and uplifting that we knew we had to come back again."

And despite foggy skies, the vets and disabled beginners left the water with smiles on their faces.
