Ice-9 Supplies Blanks for Florida Shape-Off at Expo
January 7, 2008
PRESS RELEASE
Thanks to Florida surf enthusiast Paul Eaton, rad OC foam start-up Ice-Nine continues its policy of backing the next generation of craftsmen with its sponsorship of the First Annual Florida Shape-off at Surf Expo in Orlando on January 11-13. In October of '07, Ice-Nine sponsored the so cal Tribute to the Masters Shape-off in Del Mar.
The Orlando shape-off is a tribute to legendary east coast stick king Robert Strickland. Board master Ricky Carroll, who gold-podiummed among an outstanding crew of shapers in Del Mar, will judge the foam fest, along with Skip Savage and Bud Gardner.
Additionally, Ice-Nine Foam Works will be exhibiting its trademark blanks at booth 1196S, now fully tuned up for the New Year. These blanks are made from two startling new kinds of foam: "CANE" and "ABLE." Both types of foam use MDI as an alternative for making polyurethane.
ABLE is designed with performance in mind, and uses the highest performing polyester polyols to maximize the flexural properties. It takes more time and effort to shape than traditional surfboard blanks, but many test riders have reported a noticeably better ride than with the foam they are used to riding.
CANE takes the alt idea one step further; it not only uses safer MDI technology but also incorporates a sugar-based polyether instead of traditional petroleum products. It's about as "green" as polyurethane can get, and shapers find it durable and easy to shape to boot.
At the Ice-Nine booth, visitors can also take a virtual tour of the Ice-Nine plant as well as road test the CADget online rocker program.
"At Ice-Nine, we are committed to core values," says the company's Dana Point founder Jon Stillman. "That means preserving the ancient and rapidly disappearing tradition of shaping. It is our intention to make sure that the old ways are passed on to the next generation of shapers."
At the shape-off, Ice-Nine will supply six selected craftsmen with a 10-3 blank made from its MDI polyurethane CANE formula. This group of six includes renowned sunshine state artisans Tom Neilson, Stu Sharpe, Bill Eberwein, Juan Rodriguez, George Robinson and Dave "Davo" Dedrick. Each shaper will have two hours in the shaping bay, and during this time they will be asked to faithfully replicate the 9-6 Con Rail model board pioneered by the legendary east coast shaper Robert Strickland, along with Skip Savage.
The winner will be announced Saturday night, and the blue-ribbon board will be displayed at the Cocoa Beach Surf Museum.
