Nestled 16 miles south of San Francisco lies the quiet beach town of Pacifica, known for its wide beachbreak, Linda Mar. This is no San Francisco's Ocean Beach, to the north, known for its punishing winter swells and arm burning paddle outs, nor is it like any of the peaks you'd find yourself riding for what can seem like minutes in Santa Cruz, to the south.

In fact, Linda Mar is more likely the beach those Maverick's competitors took their first soft top wipeouts on, as the break is consistently half the size and double the mellow of it's northern California counterparts.
But when you come down to Linda Mar for The Big Chill Out Longboard Invitational Surf Contest, presented in its 18th year last Saturday by the Pedro Point Surf Club, you realize why so many surfing families settle in Pacifica.

Ego would be hard to find at The Big Chill Out, but the true spirit of surfing is in plenty of supply. The following are a few of the faces of the competitors at this year's contest.
