Surfrider's Topanga Task ForceProvides New Report on Water Quality
March 9, 2007
Back in the summer, we told you about Topanga getting "F" water quality ratings over 50% of the time the past two years. Well, volunteers from the Surfrider Foundation
As a result of these efforts by Surfrider, the State Parks Department tested its septic systems around Topanga Lagoon (it owns most of the land there) and discovered that a system it owns at a restaurant was leaking and sending sewage runoff into the lagoon.
State Parks shut down the system's septic leech field immediately and began pumping the septic tank clean three times a week. Ultimately, State Parks will hook up the restaurant to a fully functioning septic system. At Surfrider¹s urging, State Parks also committed special budget funds to locate and remove dozens of septic tanks improperly abandoned around Topanga Lagoon over the past few years as homes were demolished or vacated to make way for a new state park. Surfrider is also urging L.A. County to test and, if needed, replace its Topanga lifeguard station septic system, which overflowed in July 2006.
Water quality has improved substantially at Topanga in recent months. Surfrider volunteers will continue monitoring the situation and pushing for action to improve water quality in Topanga's surf zone. If you want to be on Surfrider¹s Topanga update list, email them at surfridertopangataskforce@hotmail.com, and stay in touch with the Surfrider-Malibu Chapter at www.surfrider.org/malibu
