Sewage Spill Closes Beaches in Playas De Tijuana
August 29, 2008
PRESS RELEASE
The estimated 340,000 gallon sewage spill in Playas De Tijuana that prompted
beach closures at Border Field and Playas was the result of a scheduled pipe
repair of a sewage pump station in Playas de Tijuana late Tuesday night.
The irony is that the EPA had a big meeting that day with SD County Depart
of Environmental Health, International Boundary and Water Commission,
Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and Tijuana and Baja California health
authorities to discuss implementing a beach closure strategy for Baja
California beaches...and not once did they mention that they were planning
on discharging that night to the ocean. The IBWC found this out in an email
when they got back across the border. This is all kind of par for the course
in terms of the way TJ bureaucracy works, but what is interesting is that
the Mexican authorities issued an official beach closure for Playas de
Tijuana, something they never do. This is important because it shows that
they are beginning to see ocean pollution as a public health threat.
