San Diego Surfrider Foundation Meeting To Feature World Renowned Ocean Scientist
August 9, 2007
PRESS RELEASE

The impact of plastic debris in the ocean will be discussed at the next meeting of the Surfrider Foundation's San Diego Chapter, which will feature a presentation by world renowned Captain Charles Moore on Wednesday, August 15, 7-9 p.m. at Forum Hall in the UTC shopping mall. The meeting is open to the public and free to attend.

The evening's program will also include a representative from the City of San Diego discussing the recycling programs in the city. We also will be discussing our new "Rise Above Plastics" campaign and how the public can get involved in reducing pollution from plastic.

Captain Moore is the founder of Algalita Marine Research Foundation and discovered a plastic wasteland in the North Pacific Central Gyre. Returning from a yacht race to Hawaii Captain Moore veered from the usual sea route and saw an ocean he had never known.

"There were shampoo caps and soap bottles and plastic bags and fishing floats as far as I could see, Captain More says. "Here I was in the middle of the ocean, and there was nowhere I could go to avoid the plastic."

Ever since then, Captain Moore has dedicated his time and resources to understanding and decreasing the ocean's plastic load. His 1999 study shocked the scientific world when it found 6 times more plastic fragments by weight in the central Pacific than the associated zooplankton. His second paper found that plastic outweighs plankton by a factor of 2.5 in the surface waters of Southern California.

The site for the meeting, Forum Hall, is above the Wells Fargo branch adjacent to the UTC shopping mall. The nearest intersection is La Jolla Village Dr. and Genesee Ave. For full directions, please visit www.surfriderSD.org.

Founded in 1992, Surfrider Foundation's San Diego chapter is one of the oldest and the largest chapter within the national organization. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research and education. San Diego chapter membership totals 5,000 people throughout the county. Nationally, Surfrider Foundation membership includes more than 50,000 concerned lovers of the ocean and beaches.
