Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board Public Hearing this Thursday, November 5th
November 3, 2009
PRESS RELEASE
WHO:
Surfrider Foundation activists, surfers, volunteers and everyone who wants "Clean Water at the 'Bu."
Surfrider Beach, known as birthplace of the California beach lifestyle and the Surfrider Foundation, is an iconic spot considered to be the crown jewel of surfing. It is also one of the most polluted beaches in the state, consistently receiving poor water quality grades for over two decades. These unsafe recreational conditions come as a result from both contaminated runoff from city streets, and poorly maintained commercial and residential septic tanks in the Malibu Civic Center area. This runoff and contaminated groundwater flows into Malibu Creek, Malibu Lagoon and ultimately Surfrider Beach.
WHAT:
The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) public hearing. Following the comment period, the RWQCB will vote on a proposed prohibition on septic systems in the lower Malibu Creek watershed.
To address high levels of bacteria from runoff, the City of Malibu completed a dry weather runoff facility in February 2007, and broke ground last month on the Chili Cook Off property to collect wet weather storm water runoff. The final piece to the pollution puzzle is the removal of "high risk" septic systems in the Malibu Creek watershed (including the Malibu Colony, Civic Center, and Serra Retreat communities), and the installation of formal wastewater treatment to stop the contaminated groundwater from reaching the ocean.
WHEN:
Thursday, November 5, 2009
9:00 AM PST
WHERE:
Board Room of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
