According to NOAA: the tsunami warning for the state of Hawaii was lifted at 1:38pm local time. According to the LA Times website, the tsunami surged across the Islands on Saturday, churning up sediment with minor waves and tidal surges, but causing no apparent damage.

"I think we've dodged a bullet," Gerard Fryer of the National Tsunami Warning Center told reporters in Honolulu.
California dodged a similar bullet. The National Weather Service said there was a 2.2-foot surge in Santa Monica and a 3-foot surge in Ventura. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department reported minor damage at Ventura Harbor from several buoys washing away.

Not everyone dodged a bullet, though: Brother Andino, Davis Miller and Ian Harrison were given a ticket for surfing during the tsunami warning in San Clemente.

The tsunami was generated by a devastating 8.8 earthquake in Central Chile, which has left at least 200 dead.

The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast contest has been postponed for the day. "We've been monitoring the situation with chief meteorologists throughout the night and all projections are indicating the effects to hit the Gold Coast at approximately 8:15am," Rod Brooks, Quiksilver Pro Contest Director, said. "What those effects will be, we cannot be sure. We've been advised that the biggest surge could hit anywhere from six to 12 hours after the initial surge, so we've called competition off for the day. The event site is closed for the day, and we'll check back tomorrow at 6:30am."

Stay tuned for more on the earthquake, which struck the wave-rich Central Chile zone. Our friends over at Save the Waves offer this update:

I have already purchased a plane ticket to Santiago on March 6. I was planning on surfing all over the central coast. It looks like this trip is going to be canceled. I am super bummed, but glad I wasn't there. My prayers go out to the people of Chile.

I write from Chile, where damage in some coastal areas was serious, with many casualties. Take any tidal warning up North seriously.
