Second Lay-Day of O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland
May 1, 2009
PRESS RELEASE
It was the second lay-day at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland by Swatch as event organisers agonised over an inconsistent but fun three foot swell at Brims.
"The sets were good today," said Jarrad Howse, the Australian runner-up from two years ago. "But they just weren't consistent enough."
Contest director Matt Wilson held off making the final call until 1pm; "It wasn't quite what we want to see in an ASP WQS 6 star prime event," he said. "And with the strong swell forecast it's not necessary to run it."
Since the arrival of the event in this quiet town in the North of Scotland, all talk has been about 'The Saturday'.
With a 15 foot swell still forecast for tomorrow, chances are it's not going to disappoint.
"It looks like there's going to be plenty of swell," said Matt. "We've never had a forecast like this for this event in terms of swell... we're heading into the unknown. It should hit overnight, so we will wake up in the morning and see what's going on."
For Jarrad, and the rest of the competitors at that, the world-class break of Thurso East is the hope for the anticipated 'Saturday'.
As for the rest of the Cold Water Classic Series, Jarrad is just enjoying the adventure.
"The surf is my favourite thing about this event," Jarrad said. "It's an adventure. It's not like you park in a concrete car park and walk down the concrete steps to get to the wave. You drive down with the heaters on, get changed into your steamer and hood and all the gear and walk a couple of hundred metres across slippery rocks to get to the break."
"I have to do that at least once a year for a couple of weeks to get my head right," he said. "It's a bit like going back to the roots - to the core of surfing. That's why I love these events on the Cold Water Classic Series. It's the element of adventure."
The next call will be tomorrow May 2 at 6am
