PRESS RELEASE

The 2009 Zicatela Pro saw participants from Argentina , Australia , United States , México , South Africa and Venezuela . Surf was in the 3-4 ft. range with strong offshore winds throughout the event. Early surprises in Men's Surfing saw local groms Jony Corzo, Sasha Donnano, Cesar Petroni and Mikey Velasco advance to the second round after displacing established veterans of this famous beach break. For the groms, their luck would run out in later rounds but the surprises would persist throughout this event and into the finals of each category.

Men's Surfing Final
Defending champions Angelo Lozano and Christian Corzo both made the final along with Adan Hernandez (Niyarit) and local Chano Munoz. In yet another surprise on the final day Chano Munoz sealed his fate as 2009 Zicatela Pro Champ in the first few minutes of the final with a multi sectioned barrel coming out with both arms over his head. The others played catch-up to no avail as the conditions after Chanos wave were less than hollow. The aerial show and power turns by Angelo, Adan and Christian were not enough to catch a very happy Chano Munoz.

Womens Surfing Final
The surprise here came from local favorite 15 year old Asaya Brusa who took first ahead of the formidable seasoned pro from Venezuela , Simone Zea. 14 year olds Leila Takeda and Pamela Verbonen took 3rd and 4th respectively.

Mens Bodyboard
In the Men's Bodyboard Final 16 year old grom/surfer/bodyboarder Cesar Petroni beat out 2nd Shaun Cooper ( Australia ), 3rd local Edwin Morales and 4th Leonel Mercano in a very close heat.

Women's Bodyboard
Women's charger Soledad Fernández from Uruguay took out an accomplished field of women bodyboarders finishing first in front of 2nd Roxel Pérez, 3rd Lilia Girón and 4th Lorena Paola.

Thanks again to the Oaxaca State Surfing Association for holding this annual event.
