Red Bull Big Wave Africa Waiting Period Closes
August 30, 2007
PRESS RELEASE

Despite some great big wave action over the last three months, and a constant barrage of large surf hitting the peninsula, the Red Bull Big Wave Africa 2007 is not going to happen. There have been three events run to completion at Dungeons over the last nine years, which is a good ratio amongst big wave events world-wide, but this year will not see another winner joining the former champions as the event has drawn to a close.

The two contest directors, Gary Linden and Johnny Paarman, along with surf forecaster Spike, played an excellent game this year and made wise, educated decisions on the event, and every one of their calls were correct. Despite pressure from the athletes and the overall level of excitement that surrounds this event locally and world-wide, they took the heat and held back amongst the hype. Former event winner Greg Long was full of praises for the team, agreeing that there simply wasn't a contestable day at Dungeons this year.

That's the way big wave events roll. Some years there just seem to be giant waves every second day, other years there is a complete lack of swell, and no expert can explain why. This year wasn't a quiet year with regards to big waves, but it was an unusual year with the big swells always accompanied with the wildest of weather, the same weather that saw untold destruction across the Cape.

Another year of insight as to when Dungeons is at her best, another year of watching, and waiting. Another year of getting everyone involved primed for when Dungeons does provide the biggest waves in the Southern Hemisphere. That is what we're waiting for. That day is still to come.
