April 13, 2009
PRESS RELEASE
There is a rich history that runs through the NSSA East Coast Championships which includes CJ and Damien Hobgood, Shea and Cory Lopez, Ben Bourgeois, Gabe Kling and Eric Geiselman all raising the coveted Regional Championship cup in victory. And the action continues to intensify each year as the rising generation of east coast surfers contend for prestigious East Coast Regional titles.
The 6-star rated NSSA East Coast Championships will hit the sunshine state's finest wave magnet at Sebastian Inlet on April 16-19. The 2009 East Coast Championships is the culmination of the 2008/09 regular season events throughout the NSSA's four east coast regional conferences. A stacked field of over 400 of the east coast's most promising young up-and-comers from the NSSA's Northeast, Mid Atlantic, Southeast/North and Southeast Conferences will compete for Regional titles along with valuable 6-star ratings points. In addition, the championships will provide a pivotal opportunity for competitors to earn a berth in the Big Show - The NSSA National Championships which will be held June 17-27 at Salt Creek and Lower Trestles, California. Also running concurrently in the event is the East Coast Collegiate and High School Championships where teams will battle for Regional crowns in addition to earning their way to the NSSA National Interscholastic Championships. Rounding out the action-packed four days is the East Coast Airshow Championships where competitors will be given the chance to unleash their aerial skills in this innovative and crowd-pleasing freestyle format. The top eight airshow finishers will qualify for the National Airshow Championships where they will meet up with the top eight aerialists from Hawaii and the West Coast. As the final NSSA east coast event prior the National Championships, the East Coast Championships is a prime proving ground for surfers to showcase their skills on Sebastian Inlet's center stage as well as gauge their potential as they make the push towards the Nationals.
Surfers on top of the contenders list include two-time National Champion Evan Geiselman who has made it to the Regional Championships winners circle a record 12 times, 2008 Open Juniors runner-up Evan Thompson who will be energized to take home the Regional cup this year, 4-time Regional Champion Cam Richards, 2-time Regional Champion Tristan Thompson, defending Open Women's Champion Jassett Umbel, 4-time Regional Champion Quincy Davis, former Regional Champion Fisher Heverly, 2008 East Coast Championships four-division finalist Weston Williams and 2008 three-division finalists Nick Rupp, Oliver Kurtz, Tayler Brothers and Noah Schweizer. On top of the conference leader board in the Open Men's is Pete Polanski from the Southeast, John Massey from the Southeast/North and Cole Richards from the Mid Atlantic who will all be vying for their first Regional victories. Top rated Open Junior's competitors slated to compete are Michael Ciaramella who went undefeated in the Northeast regular season, Dylan Kowalski from the Mid Atlantic, former Regional Champion Tanner Strohmenger from the Southeast and Noah Schweizer from the Southeast/North. In the Open Longboard division, Patrick Nichols will aim for his second straight title. In the Collegiate Championships, 2008 champion Flagler will be eager to claim back-to-back titles while perennial east coast power and 2008 runner-up UCF is seeking their first title since 2004.
