Mulanovich Regains First Place WCT Ranking, Tour Heads to Peru and Her Home Break
October 13, 2008
PRESS RELEASE

Powered by consistently strong surfing, pro surfer Sofia Mulanovich stands back on top of the Association of Surfing Professionals 2008 Women's World Championship Tour ratings following her performance at the Beachley Classic. The Beachley Classic, stop number five of eight on the tour where Mulanovich placed third, was held at Manly Beach, Australia from October 9-13, 2008.

Mulanovich, now up 463 points, scored an impressive 8.67 out of a possible 10 before succumbing to a minor injury in the semifinals. Her first place ranking was secured earlier in the contest after Stephanie Gilmore lost in round three to 14-year-old Tyler Wright, who went on to win the event. In the same round, Mulanovich continued on after defeating Karina Petroni.

Prior to the Beachley Classic, Mulanovich was just a scant 12 points, or one heat difference, behind Gilmore in the race for the ASP Women's World Title. "After passing the third round and regaining the number one ranking, I felt like the pressure was off a little bit and I had nothing to lose," Mulanovich says. "I felt pretty free and I think this helped my surfing through the semis."

Now in first place, Mulanovich heads home to Peru for the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru where she'll defend her standing in front of an intensely enthusiastic local crowd. "I grew up surfing Mancora my whole life, it is my favorite stop on the tour," explains Mulanovich. "Northern Peru is where I feel the most comfortable when in the water both because of the familiarity of the wave and the huge crowds that come out to support, which gets me really fired up to surf well."

The 25-year-old Peruvian won the opening WCT event of the 2008 season, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast going on to podium at four out of five WCT events held this year. In addition to the contest podiums this season, Sofia has recently been honored with her fourth consecutive #1 Surfer Poll Award. With the men's tour champion already crowned, the women's race is the place for action in the remainder of 2008. Follow the excitement next from Peru, November 3-8, 2008 at aspworldtour.com.

Sofia Mulanovich is supported by Roxy, Red Bull, Movistar, Lan, Reef, Channel Islands Surfboards and Dakine.
