Locals Rip at 2008 Cape Cod Surfing Championships Round #1
July 22, 2008
PRESS RELEASE

Perfection is the best word to use for describing the surf conditions for the 2008 Cape Cod Surfing Championships Round #1, held this past Saturday. The site was one of the premier beach breaks on the East Coast, Whitecrest Beach, located in South Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

Although the ocean water was an icy 55 degrees, the waves more than made up for the chill, with a consistent 4-5 foot swell, breaking with perfect barreling "A-Frame" peaks. ESA Director Ron Belanger said; "It just doesn't get any better, especially in the summer."

As expected in ideal competitive conditions, the caliber of surfing was at its' highest level. "Some of the riding was totally insane," said Belanger. "This was true, especially with our Brazilian contingent. I gave the Open winner, Matheus de Souza, a perfect score of 10 on one wave in the final. It was that good. And I have never given out a 10 to anyone."

Impressive in his first contest was Narragansett's Jonathan Tartaro, who pulled off some strong backside snap backs and tucked into a hot inside section to win the Boys Division. His brother, Anthony was equally as hot, as he powered his way to a win in the Menehune Long board Final, and then switched over to a short board to win the Menehune Division.

Hingham's Chris Orlando continued to remain undefeated in New England competition, as he ripped up both the lefts and rights, to take the Junior Men's Division. Fall River's Matheus de Souza left no doubt that he was the most outstanding surfer in the event, as he blazed across wave after wave with lightning speed, adding repeated roundhouse cutbacks, hard carves, and at one point, a lip spray that exceeded 6 feet. For these feats, he claimed the Men's and Open titles.

Cape Cod locals dominated most of the other divisions. Veteran Brendan McCray of East Orleans, charged both the Senior Mens and Master Long board finals, finding the best waves, and racking up the points with some long and fast rides through two and three sections on the same breaking waves. Wellfleet's Seth Sullivan found the best tubes in the final, to win the Masters Division, while Cambridge ace, Kitty Pechet remained undefeated in the Grand Legends division.

Narragansett's Jerry Tartaro won his first ever Legends Long board title, nose riding past Tim Brooks for the victory. Cape Cod logger, Blake Olson cross stepped his way to the win in the Men's Long board final.

In the female ranks, it was another consistent performance by Myra Kotalac, as the Nantucket surfer took her second straight title in the Girls Division. Longtime Cape Cod regular Sue Glidden showed up the field in the Senior Women's age group, as she easily won both the long and short board heats with ease.

Sudbury's Katie Ryan was another double winner, as she returned from a shoulder injury, to win both the Women and Women Long board finals. All finalists received merchandise prizes donated by the Gansett Juice Surf Shop, from Narragansett, Rhode Island.

ESA competitors return to action on August 2nd, at either the Narragansett Town Beach, or Scarborough State Beach, for the annual Rhode Island State Championships. The contest will be on call for August 1st. Interested surfers can call the ESA hotline at 401.727.2605 after 6 PM for updates.
