First Surf: Free Surf Clinic
July 14, 2009
On July 11, 2009, local Fernandina Beach surfers put on the second annual First Surf: Free Surf Clinic at Sadler Road beach access to provide free surf lessons to anyone interested. The event was organized by local Jr/Pro surfer Sean Poynter, but wouldn't have been possible without the huge amount of help given by Fernandina's local surfers and event sponsors. Nearly 150 people, from ages 4 to 65, came out to learn the basics of surfing from water safety to board preparation to actual time in the water with instructors. Almost every participant made it to their feet on a board, braving plenty of bumps, bruises, scratches, and classic wipeouts (lots of nosedives!). Mother Nature also came up big for the event, blessing it with waves and beautiful sunny weather after a month-long, Florida summertime flat spell and a week of straight rain. The waves were even a little too gnarly for some of the participants and quite a few of the instructors got their butts handed to them trying to manage their students in the choppy surf.
All in all, the event was a huge success. It's safe to say that lot's of good karma was spread on July 11 in Fernandina Beach. If you remember the rush of the first time you ever stood up on a wave, you definitely understand the feelings that were in the air during the event. Things came together in an almost destiny-like way and the local boys came up huge. As organizers, we couldn't have asked for more and we're stoked to hold the third annual First Surf: Free Surf Clinic next July.
Special thanks to sponsors Cafe Karibo, Driftwood Surf Shop, CrossFit Amelia Island, Pipeline Surf Shop and Surf Team, P5 Productions, and Freak Traction
