Corona Dairyland Surf Classic Hits Sheboygan, Wisconsin this Labor Day Weekend
August 31, 2009
PRESS RELEASE

Wisconsin is known for brats, cheese and as the home of the Green Bay Packers, but it is also home to the largest population of freshwater and Midwest surfers in the world. These freshwater surfers are happy to hang ten on the waves of Lake Michigan, and on Saturday, September 5th, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, will host the 21st annual Corona Dairyland Surf Classic.

Sheboygan, also known as the 'Malibu of the Midwest,' boasts 22 different breaks on its five-mile coastline and is considered the No. 1 spot for freshwater surfing in the world. The waves, which can be chest-to-shoulder high, are created by wind rather than the tide. Labor Day weekend marks the start of the Great Lakes surfing season, which runs from fall to early winter, with waves getting bigger as the weather gets cooler.

The Corona Dairyland Surf Classic consists of a weekend of surfing events and festivities including the paddle relay and paddle competition, while surfboard art and beach vendors add to the 'Surf City' attitude.

The Surf Classic was founded in 1988 by twin brothers Larry 'Longboard' and Lee 'Waterflea' Williams, 40-year veterans of freshwater surfing and lifelong residents of Sheboygan. Both were featured in the surf documentaries Step Into Liquid and Unsalted. More information can be found at http://www.visitsheboygan.com/dairyland/.
