February 17, 2009
PRESS RELEASE
The first day of the 2009 Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro is locked, loaded and ready to fire on the North Shore, with excellent conditions and the world's best ready for action.
As the first event on the International Bodyboarding Association (IBA) Men's World Tour for 2009, carrying a Grand Slam status as well as double points towards the championship, there is a lot at stake as the best in business prepare to battle it out at surfing's equivalent of the Pantheon - Pipeline.
Today the trials were contested at "Erma's" on the east coast in powerful two-metre conditions, with eight competitors earning qualification for the main event.
With 144 of the world's best riders chomping at the bit to compete at one of most prestigious event's on the IBA Tour, the action is sure to be electric
"Tomorrow is looking like a 99% chance for a start " said Terry McKenna, IBA International General Manager, after surveying conditions and predicted forecasts.
"The swell kicked up to almost 8-10 feet this afternoon and will back off a touch by the morning," McKenna added.
"The free-surfing session this afternoon was nothing short of amazing and the stage is set for a massive day tomorrow."
Tomorrow will see the history books re-written when one of the most exciting professional surfers in the world takes on the best bodyboarders in the world at his home break.
Jamie O'Brien, who is widely revered as on the best stand-up surfers in the world, has been waiting for this moment for a long time and is eager to show the world that he is up to the challenge.
O'Brien will join fellow Hawaiian Leroy Kaiwi in heat two of the fourth round and the eyes of the surfing world will be watching closely to see the outcome.
"Its one of those classic moments in sport when its impossible not to be intrigued," remarked McKenna with a smile.
"Its fuelled some interesting banter over the last few weeks since we made the announcement of Jamie's inclusion into the event," he continued.
"Tomorrow we will see the end result and I for one can't wait to watch."
The waiting period begins tomorrow and continues until February 27 2009 - with the best three days being used for competition.
