17-Year Old Logan Strook Takes out Latin American Legend Magnum Martinez
June 3, 2007
17 year-old Logan Strook, a senior at Huntington Beach High School defeated Latin American legend Magnum Martinez to advance to the Quarterfinals on day 2 of the 2007 Quiksilver Pro at La Libertad, El Salvador.
Martinez, a 2-time ALAS Tour Champion, was a favorite to win this event, but failed to find any high scoring waves in the stormy, but solid 4-6 foot (1-2 meter) surf at Punta Roca. Strook, on the other hand, found a reeling right where he did a series of carves, followed by a long tube across the inside section.
Strook, prominently featured in the recently premiered documentary about the Huntington Beach High School Surf Team, "Chasing the Dream," is sharing a room here with Martinez and found the win bittersweet. "I'm stoked I won, but I wish I could've beaten someone other than Magnum," said Strook. "I would have loved for he and I to have made the final."
The standout of the day was Peru's Gabriel Aramburu. The powerful goofyfoot posted the highest total score of the day (13.23 out of 20) during the final heat of Round 3.
Also posting impressive wins in Round 3 were two local surfers, Juan Carlos Ramos and Wilber Alberenga. "I'm really happy to make it to the Quarterfinals," said Ramos. "My whole family is here and I got motivated when I heard everyone cheering for me on the rocks."
The waves were somewhat bumpy and a passing tropical storm delivered periods of heavy rain. Still, despite the inclement weather, hundreds of people came down to the point to see the action along with national television and print media. The contest was a major feature in all on the national newspapers today.
The event will conclude tomorrow. The surf expected to drop a bit in size but will be cleaner.
