CONDITIONS: Fun, flexing south swell kept everyone in Schwack City over the weekend, with the country's top high school surfers gathering at Church to duke it out for Red Bull's coveted Riders Cup.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS: The eight regional finalists, for starters. These teams fought through a long, competitive season, edging out local rivals for the chance to surf in the big show. Of course, there can only be one national champion, and that honor went to Carlsbad High. Soaring to victory behind the MVP performance of Gabe Garcia and strategic coaching of David Barr, the pack from North County dominated the waves in the final round and topped San Clemente, 83 to 78.

QUOTE: "San Clemente High was a super good team; they did some great surfing and it was close until the very end. We're pumped to be the national champions." -- Carlsbad High MVP Gabe Garcia
