SURF NEWS BEACH CLEAN UP IN HUNTINGTON BEACH

I woke up on Saturday morning with one thing on my mind. No, not surfing -- the waves suck in The OC during the winter. So, I decided to give back to the ocean that has provided me endless hours of joy by participating in Ocean Minded's Beach Clean up.

It was hard to decide what to wear down to the beach that morning. Should I show up in board shorts and sandals? Or a Dikkies outfit with my name tag from the previous job at the local grade school. I was out the door and into action, but first a quick stop at Java Point to buy a small coffee and bagel. But little did I know Surfline purchased coffee, bagels, and donuts for all who participated in the morning's activity. Killer!
I walked across PCH onto the HB pier and began to survey the vast beach for the Surfline tent. There she blew, on the northside of the pier, crowded with fellow trash picker-uppers. The tent was calling my name and the beach was screaming for my backbreaking work. That's when I noticed I had spilt coffee all over my white shirt. But I didn't care because I came to pick up trash left behind by lazy beach goers.

I grabbed a plastic sack and went to town. People were scattered mainly to the north of the tent, so I went against the grain and headed south. And that's where I hit the mother load -- cigarette butts, wrappers, bottle caps, balloons, and even a syringe from some steroid-shooting junkie. Upon filling the sack, I went back to report my findings to base camp. I felt like I should have received an award, but I remembered that this wasn't about me. It was about Mother Nature.

My work here was done and I left with a coffee stained shirt and a heightened sense of awareness for the beach that has given me so much.
