On September 29th, Australian surf adventurer Peter Troy passed away at his home in Mudjimba, QLD from a blood clot in his lung. He was 70 years old.

Born in Torquay, Australia, Troy is best known for his discoveries in Bali and Java in the early seventies. In 1975 he was one of the first to surf Nias.

He is also known for his part in Paul Witzig's 1971 classic 'Sea of Joy' where he and Wayne Lynch surfed newly discovered Tamarin Bay on Mauritius.

A true adventurer, he claimed to have visited 130 countries, many in Africa. He surfed Jeffreys Bay in 1966.

Other achievements include: an Australian Sports Medal in 2000, inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame in 2002, and awarded with a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to surfing in 2007.

In Australia Troy ran a Sydney surf-movie-only theatre as well as a Noosa Heads motel. He was also curator of Surfworld, Torquay surf Museum.

He is survived by his wife Libby and will be greatly missed.

Peter ran a surf shop in Mooloolaba for years and I would go down and pick his brain about his adventures. I could sit for hours listening to his tails of hardcore exploration. He was incredibly inspirational and a unique character. May his legacy for surf adventure live on. shaun@worldsurfaris.com

My condolencense to the Troy family, Mr. Troy was a pioneer surfer in Peru, I was probably 8 or 9 when I saw him surf back in teh sixties, we all kids in Peru admire him, with his long blond hair and his amazing surfing... passing under the pier in cerro azul or surfing mounster waves in KonTiki or Puntas Rocas( he was the first to surf Punta Rocas with Mota Navarro) Mr. Troy is in our memories, I know he is leaving a lot of good friends in Peru.

i read accounts of peter troy walking from one side of the amazon to the other with nothing but a pair of shorts on.no shoes,no camping gear, nothing. what a couragous and curious man he must have been!search his stories out over the net,and you'll find a real hunter for waves and a beautiful soul.just when you thought you'de found some secret break somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, chances are that peter troy had been there 40 or 50 years before you.his stories in a book i would buy.hail pt

To Whom it may concern, Peter troy was the phater of brazilian modern surfing. he arrived in rio de janeiro on 1964 from Peru. His journey trought the amazon forest caused him to arrive in Rio full od tropical disseases. After he had displayed his surfing skills in front of an astonished brazilian crowd at Arpoador beach he became the first to show the brazilians how to surf on a modern equipment. Peter spent 6 months in Brasil hanging with his new surf buddies. He will be never forgotten by us
