FATAL SHARK ATTACK IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA
An anti-shark device does no good as a diver bleeds to death from a white shark bite

May 2, 2002 In a horrifying flashback to 2000's triple great white shark deaths, a diver has been attacked and killed by a big white off the South Australian coast.

Paul Buckland, 23 years of age, from Port Lincoln, South Australia, was attacked Tuesday just after surfacing from a short scallop-hunting dive in Smoky Bay, Ceduna, some miles from Cactus Beach.

Buckland came up "in the shark's mouth" and yelling for help, according to Port Lincoln police. Deckhand Shannon Jenzen tried to haul Buckland from the water, but the shark attacked from behind, taking a leg and large part of his torso. Buckland bled to death shortly thereafter.

Mr Buckland had been wearing an activated SharkPOD -- a South African-made electronic shark repellent device -- but it clearly failed to deter the great white, estimated at over 15 feet in length. The shark has been spotted several times in recent weeks in Smoky Bay.

In 2000 two surfers were taken within 48 hours of each other, one at Cactus, the second at Elliston 160 miles down the coast.

Great white sharks are protected in Australian waters, and it is likely the shark will be driven from the area rather than killed, according to the South Australian Fisheries Department. --Nick Carroll
