SURFLINE RE-LAUNCHES WOMEN'S CHANNEL WITH A FRESH LOOK
"We're not going to create pages of sparkles and tell you that it's cool"
September 1, 2006, Huntington Beach, Calif. -- Surfline.com, the world's most popular online destination for surfers, recently announced the re-launch of its women's channel. Titled simply "Women", the channel is a focused, online resource that covers topics relevant to the rapidly growing population of women surfers.
In fact, surf clubs around the country catering to women who surf are seeing more interest. "Our club has grown from 5 surfers to 700 in just under three years," says Annie Richardson of Northern California Women's Surf Club.
Most surfers agree that surfing still remains male-dominated, but more and more the waves are being shared by men and women, and Surfline intends to be at the forefront. "Surfline has played an integral part in the evolution of surfing," says six-time Women's World Surf Champion, Layne Beachley.
The revamped women's channel reflects the changing horizon of surf culture. "Women can get lost in the mix of surfing," admits Darlene Conolly, one of Surfline's Contributing Editors. "The majority of coverage is about men and sometimes what goes on in the women's world gets overlooked. So our goal is to highlight and present to you the current state of women's surfing in this section of Surfline... we're not going to create pages of sparkles and tell you that it's cool."
Surfline's women's channel includes a few different sections: Surf News, profiles of pros, video, contest coverage, travel, surf tips (how about combining Pilates and surfing?) and feature stories.
Each month over 100,000 women surfers visit Surfline.com, but Surfline editors intend to make all of its content accessible. "To our knowledge there aren't separate beaches according to sex and, likewise, we don't want to make a place where men won't feel welcome or interested; we'd like to entertain everyone," says Surfline Contributing Editor, Christina Scannapiego.
